“Stop Smoking”: Really easy to say but less easy to carry out.  Non-smokers don’t know how difficult it is for a hardened smoker to resist a puff of a cigarette no matter how hard they try. Are you a smoker and think you have you tried everything there is to stop? Perhaps  you haven’t yet tried the ideas below.  Get started today and put an end to your smoking habit.

Stop smoking might seem an easy thing to do when we aren’t a smoker. However if you are a smoker you always look forward to your cigarette and coffee break so you can catch up with your colleagues that you hardly see in the day as you are too busy hard at work. Often people have tried to stop, but nothing seems to work. The evil cigarette always comes back to you, and you give in once again. However this vicious circle can be broken with some simple tips! You’ll see how easy it is to stop smoking provided you have a bit of will power….

1/ Occupy your mind when you feel the urge  (which lasts no more than five minutes!)

Are you are in the middle of quitting but find it difficult to dull the urge for nicotine when you have reached your limit?  Good news is this urge only ever lasts 5 minutes which you should be able to endure!  Occupy your mind during this time so that it can pass more quickly by reading, exercising, walking, watching a film, playing a video game or gardening.  All these ways are good to stop smoking!

2/ Change to an e-cigarette for a while

As this is a recent phenomenon there is not enough time to determine any real perspective on the effects of e-cigarettes for our health.  However what is sure is that the it is much less harmful for our body than a normal cigarette.  If you avoid artificial flavours and nicotine (some e-cigarette models contain it while others don’t) you will limit the carcinogenic substances that you inhale. It is up to you to choose what e-liquids you would like.   This is a great way to gradually start to quit smoking.  Maybe one day you’ll be able to give up altogether. At least that’s what you all hope!

3/ Put the money you have saved in a glass jar

A company study in 2009 by the New England Journal of Medicine showed that money is one of the best motivations to stop smoking.  The best way to put it into perspective is to put the money you have saved each day into a clear glass jar and visualise; at the end of each month or week, all the money you have earned.  This is a great way to get yourself to quit!

4/ Fix a cut off date and get rid of anything associated

Are you ready to have a healthier body and mind as a non-smoker?  Well done, you have only showed you’ve got what it takes.  Give yourself a cut off date and stick to it.  Now get rid of everything that could make you think of smoking like lighters, matches, ashtrays and of course any packets of cigarettes you have lying around!

5/ Welcome a kudzu plant into your home

Swap nicotine for kudzu which is a magical tropical plant!  Incredible but true, this plant helps to put you off the smell of tobacco

6/ Ask your friends for help

Ask your family, friends and even your colleagues to help you to keep up your goal.  Ask them to not smoke in your company to make it easier for you to stop. Don’t be afraid to remind them as perhaps they don’t realise how much you want to stop.

7/ Mental reasoning

Tell yourself that smoking is for the weak.  Do you fall into this category?  Smoking also contributes to atmospheric pollution and as a result the disappearance of certain animal and plant species… What’s more your family is at risk of suffering passively from your smoking habit which could lead to lung cancer.  Do you really want this on your conscience?

8/ Avoid places where people smoke

During the first couple of weeks when you decide to quit it is better to try and avoid mixing with people in the smoking area.  However you should still take a break during the day.  On the contrary getting some real fresh air could help your concentration.  However try and avoid your smoking colleagues when you take a break.   At least to start with.  You will see later when you know how to resist the urge for a cigarette.

9/ Try traditional medicine to find the root of the addiction

Traditional and ancient medicines are just as good as modern day medicine!  Hypnosis, acupuncture or meditation are great at treating your urge to smoke.   These types of medicine reveal a stress, anxiety of psychological affection that is buried deep inside you.  Don’t cover it up with medicines that only cure the surface, instead you should find the cause!
