Eat out-of-date foods with no risk to your health
Don’t completely trust the expiry dates on the packets of the food you eat every day -it’s better to trust their taste and smell to ensure you’re not contributing to food waste! But for the more picky among you, here is a list of foods you can definitely still eat after the best before date…
1/ Yoghurts
Yoghurts, as long as they are natural, fruit or sweet yoghurts, can be consumed without any danger one or two weeks after the marked expiration date.
2/ Tinned food
Tinned food lasts an extremely long time.. Don’t worry about the date marked on the tins, you can keep them for a year longer, as long as they haven’t been opened of course, or are swollen or damaged, and as long as they have been kept in a dry area.
3/ Chocolate
Like many of you may already know, sugar is a preservative all on its own! Chocolate is therefore no exception, which can be kept for up to two years more than indicated on the packet.
4/ Rice and pasta
Dried foods can generally be kept for an extra year or more, if they have been kept in a sealed glass jar that is impermeable to any kind of creepy crawlies.
5/ Cheese
Even if it considered a fresh product, hard cheeses can keep well for around ten months. Soft cheeses, on the other hand, only keep for around ten days. Trust your nose!
6/ Eggs
If they are hard and kept in the fridge, eggs can be eaten for up to a week after the expiry date. In their shell, it is recommended not to exceed 21 days after laying, and to keep them in their original box.
