6/ Balls of lightning
Many is the scientist who doubts the existence of lightning balls! However, many people report having seen them with their own eyes. They describe spheres of light that appear during a storm, which in certain cases, come through their windows or down their chimneys! Researchers continue to struggle with the subject.
7/ Animals raining from the skies
According to biologist Waldo McAtee, salamander larvae have fallen from the sky in the American state of Minnesota, while in the UK, it was fish. Following the same pattern, tadpoles reportedly appeared in the skies over Japan, and frogs in Serbia…. A 19th century French physician also reported animals falling from the sky, which had been lifted up by violent winds. Theories contend that marine tornadoes cause life forms in the seas, lakes or rivers to be sucked into the vortex, which are released during the tornado. But no study has ever confirmed this theory.
8/ Rocks that move by themselves in Death Valley
It seems that mysterious forces are at work in Death Valley Park in the United States. Forces that can move enormous rocks in the vicinities of dried lakes. Researchers have struggled with the phenomenon for centuries, without ever coming to a satisfactory explanation. In 1960, a surveillance programme observing the stones was carried out by geologists. The results concluded that in the winter of that year, 28 rocks moved by more than 200 meters, at an average speed of one meter per second. According to one researcher, the presence of an artificial ditch draining excess water could be the cause. But no other hypothesis has been put forward.
9/ The Megalithic Spheres of Costa Rica
Hundreds of giant spheres of stone, carved in the rocks of Costa Rica before Spanish colonisation, still pose a mystery for scientists. Discovered in the 1930s, certain spheres measure up to two meters in diameter! Las Bolas, as the locals call them, date back to approximately 1000 BC. It’s a phenomenon so difficult to understand that there are little to no writings on the subject. Theories abound relating to lost cities or the the presence of aliens.
10/ Monarch butterflies’ sense of direction
Every year, millions of Monarch butterflies from North America make a journey of over 2,000 km to migrate south. Their destination has been a mystery throughout the centuries. However, in 1976, researchers discovered that the butterflies spend the winter in Mexico, in a forest in the mountains. But nobody really knows how they manage to find their way exactly to this spot. If scientists first thought that they use the position of the sun, adjusting to local time using their antennae, this still doesn’t explain how they locate the exact mountain…. Curiouser and curiouser!
