Online business has become a reality for many home-based ambitious entrepreneurs. Indeed, on the internet, it has become possible to earn money through drop shipping, affiliate marketing), making videos with ad revenue and so on. Thus, this is something people either start on the side or do as their job whenever it becomes possible. Indeed, everyone can make the leap into entrepreneurship with ambition, hard work, a laptop and the right idea. Looking for ideas to start your own online business without necessarily quitting your day job? Here is a collection of easy ideas!

1) Launch your drop-shipping store

Drop-shipping offers several advantages, the main one being that you don’t need a physical warehouse to start. You just create a e-commerce website and purchase the item from a third party that has it shipped directly to the customer. The supplier basically handles the whole process. It means that you don’t actually need to buy a lot of products from a manufacturer risking to find out afterwards that there is no market for them. This solution is great if you are on a budget. In addition, it doesn’t really require particular skills and you won’t struggle with the inventory. You can run your online business everywhere and you are free to decide when you want to work.

2) An online store to sell your own creations

There is a market for plenty of creations! If you are crafty, you can definitely monetize your handmade beauty products, furniture, jewelry or clothing. Artists could also have their own platform to showcase their art and sell it. Whether you are a musician, painter or photographer, you can turn your art and passion into a source of income. And if if works, you might be able to do what you love for a living. Writers can also sell their own ebooks through a download link. Many platforms allow you to start selling your homemade goods and your creations (Etsy, Craigslist…). However, you could also create a website and establish pricing strategies with Shopify. It gives you more control and makes it easier to track and fulfill orders.

3) You could also teach an online course

Internet is known to be an endless source of knowledge. If you are particularly skilled or knowledgeable about a topic, chances are it will be useful to someone willing to learn about it. It could be anything from music production to web development, building apps or marketing. Of course, it takes some work to enroll people in your course and create quality content to teach people how to do something from scratch. Most of the time, it will require several videos (filming and editing included) or thorough articles, meaning more work on your hands. However, if you manage to share it, it can quickly become a source of regular income. Moreover, helping people is extremely rewarding.

4) Start a blog

blog online income

Blogs shifted from virtual journals to real marketing tools where monetization has become a common practice. Indeed, promoting products, sharing sponsored posts or hosting third-party ads are now frequent although it does require to gain an audience beforehand. Thus, you will have to be motivated in order to offer quality content and build an engaged audience. This is definitely a long-term work and monetization is the fruit of long labours. To put it simply: you won’t see the result right off the bat. However, once you have your audience, it will provide you with regular income. Having a gift for writing and being regular is also essential.

5) Launch a podcast or become an influencer

If having a blog is not you cup of tea, you could also launch a podcast. It is similar to starting a blog but you’ll need a high-quality microphone and an audio recording software. And why not inviting guests or solicit sponsors and advertisers to make unbelievable connections? This is indeed how you will manage to build your own online business from scratch. Finally, if you are comfortable with the social media and enjoy sharing your own quality photos and videos, becoming an influencer could be a possibility. Because of dishonest practices (buying followers and so on), sponsors are now more interested on smaller influencers with an engaged following. Thus, you won’t need millions of followers to earn some money!

No matter what type of website and activity you choose, you can pretty much always rely on affiliate marketing to make an additional income. How does it work? You recommend a product or a service to your audience. Then, you make sales commissions by driving traffic to e-commerce sites through affiliate links or referral codes in your blog posts, emails or other channels.

10/ Eagle

In 1965, a royal eagle named Goldie managed to escape from London Zoo.  During its 12 day escape, the bird became a nation “celebrity.  The zoo received many calls and letters from people around the country giving employees advice on how to capture the eagle.

After numerous capture attempts, the second zookeeper managed to successfully catch the bird by luring it with a dead rabbit attached to a rope.  Once Goldie appeared the zookeeper approached the bird gently and they caught it with his bare hands!

During its time on the run, the eagle only attacked a duck in the garden of the American Ambassador in the UK and two terriers.  Not long after the bird managed to escape for a second time however this time he was on the loose for only four days.

A takin weighing 363 kg managed to escape from a zoo in 2018.   One morning while a vet had come to do a routine inspection, the animal started to charge repeatedly at the enclosure until it gave way.

While it escaped, the animal injured two employees (although not severely) and was on the run for an hour before it was sedated and returned to its enclosure.

Potomania is when someone needs to drink water all the time as they don’t want to feel like the have not drunk enough. They can often suffer from a sore throat or can become irritable.  Although our body needs water to stay on form, it is also not good to drink too much water either.  Someone who suffers from this addiction can drink up to 10 litres of water per day which is excessively dangerous. This can cause a significant reduction in salt levels in the blood which is necessary for the nervous system to function properly.  What is more our bladder can only hold a certain amount of liquid so you’ll have to constantly need to go to the toilet.

However this therapy hasn’t been scientifically proven…. In fact some people get addicted that they are constantly looking for a source of urine as soon as they can… not very appetizing!

3/ Tanning Booths

During the summer many people head to hot countries where they can top up their tan.  Sometimes you can even go to tropical countries to get a good tan in winter.  However in Britain getting a tan can be hard.  This is why many go to UV tanning booths so they can have tanned skin all year round.  However this is not got for your skin especially if you have regular sessions.  Scientific research has even shown that the ares of the brain stimulated by the tanning sessions is the same as the area stimulated by heroine….

1/  Escape from the Tower of London

Many captives or traitors were imprisoned in the infamous Tower of London during tense periods of British history. The ancient prison, which was also an arena of torture, was impenetrable.  Once captives entered no one ever came out.  However on the 3rd October in 1597, the English Jesuit priest John Gerand successfully managed to break out of jail!  He didn’t manage to achieve it alone as other members of the Catholic Order managed to devise an escape plan.   John Gerard was given a rope from his jailer who he had befriended.  Despite his injuries, the priest managed to lower himself down from the building and then cross the moat.  One of the most spectacular prison escapes!

2/ One and only escape from Doges Palace in Venice

Doges were Italian magistrates.  As a result for a long time this palace was the administration headquarters of Venice.  It also was a prison which was situated in the roof of the palace.  It was called plombi in reference to the lead used to construct the roof.  The only person who ever managed to escape from this prison was Giacomo Casanova, the renowned and accomplished adventurer.  His seductive behavior and casual morals displeased the Church who sentenced him to five years in prison.  However Casanova and his cell mate devised an escape plan.  His friend dug a hole in the wall which accessed the outside wall using a simple nail!

As a great libertine, daring speaker and a man who only thought of enjoying life, I do not think that I am guilty (…) – Giacomo Casanova, History of my escape from the prisons of the Republic of Venice, 1780.

3/ Escape from Imrali prison island in Turkey

Billy Hayes, an American, was convicted of trying to smuggle drugs out of the Turkish territory in 1970.  Initially sentenced to four years in prison Hayes was placed in a psychiatric hospital and in many prisons in Turkey.  Authorities increased his sentence to 30 years and so was transferred to the Imrali prison island which often housed smugglers and drug traffickers in July 1975.  However on the 2nd October 1975, Hayes took advantage of his guard’s lack of attention and managed to steal a boat and row to the coast.  He recounted his escape in his book the Midnight Express which was adapted into a film in 1978.

4/ Successive escapes from the Bastille, Paris

The Bastille in Paris used to be a very heavily guarded prison.  Only very lucky prisoners managed to escape. Antoine de Chabannes, the Count of Dammartin was one of the lucky ones.  Under the reign of Louis XI, the Bastille was used as a prison.  Chabannes was imprisoned for belonging to the Ligue du Bien Public which was a group of princes fighting against their king.  Thanks to his wife Chabannes managed to shorten his prison sentence. His wife organised a diversion with other members of the league which allowed her husband time to escape.  A few months later Louis XI signed a peace treaty with his former adversaries and established once more Count de Dammartin’s rights.

5/ Camp 14 Breakout in North Korea

It is no surprise that one of the most authoritarian countries in the world has work camps.  Life and working conditions are very difficult and the majority of prisoners die of hunger, fatigue or due to repeated violent beatings.  Shin Dong-hyuk was born and brought up in this hellish camp.  He is also the only person to manage to escape and recount the horrors and existence of this place to the outside world.  The last straw was seeing his mother and brother die before his eyes.  At the age of 23 he managed to scale a high voltage fence and escape.  Blaine Harden, recounts his story in the book Escape from Camp 14: One Man’s Remarkable Odyssey From North Korea to Freedom in the West.

Film make up is becoming more impressive than ever before.  Here are some before and after images that should leave you speechless. Film make-up artists have a real skill!

Make-up is really important in cinema just as it is in photography and cinema.  Nowadays, thanks to computer generated imaging technology, actor transformations are easier and more impressive to achieve than ever before  However nothing beats good old makeup which the original type of disguise!  Here are 10 of the most impressive make-up transformations in cinema.

1/ John Hurt in the Elephant Man

The make up for the film Elephant Man has an unusual backstory.  The actor John Hurt had to wear a latex prosthetic so that he could become the character of John Merrick.  It took several hours each day to fit the prosthetic.  The main character John Merrick was in fact a real person so the film recounts a true story.  After his death, John Merrick’s organs as well as molds for some of his body parts were conserved.  During the war, German air raids destroyed his organs however the molds miraculously stayed intact.  As a result the make-up team managed to use parts of the real face of John Merrick so as to accurately reconstruct his face and create a highly realistic transformation.  This make up  transformations clearly deserves to be on the list of the most impressive film makeup!

2/ Robert Englund in A Nightmare on Elm Street

Again Freddy Kruegar’s make up was created with a latex prosthetic.  Robert England had to sit for around 3 to 4 hours every day for his make up.  His make up artist David Miller said that Robert was one of the nicest people he had worked with in his career as he was very patient and never complained.  This is certainly one of the most impressive and scary makeup transformations!

3/ Johnny Depp din Edward Scissor Hands

On paper, scars, a pale complexion and messy hair doesn’t sound that impressive.  However these details are enough to make Johnny Depp look unrecogniseable!  As well as the makeup, Johnny Depp had to wear a really tight costume which was also exceedingly warm.  Scenes were often interrupted as the actor started to feel faint…

4/ Heath Ledger in the The Dark Night

A rather standard makeup that turned out to be very effective!  Heath Ledger actually came up with the make up himself. You could well believe it was done by an amateur as the white make up cracks under the actor’s expression.  Many layers were needed to create this roughly applied effect while black circles had to be added around Ledger’s eyes to create a more severe look. Together these details create a convincing result.  In fact, behind this make up, you hardly recognise the now deceased actor.

5/ Robin William in Mrs Doubtfire

Initially the film’s director, Chris Colombus, decided to put very little make on Robin William’s face, just a little lipstick and some light makeup. However the actor was immediately recognisable. Even with a false nose, you could still see recognise the man hidden behind. In the end they then decided to recreate the whole face by analyzing the portrait of more than 500 women! Eventually an elderly English woman’s portrait caught the film team’s attention and won the vote. William’s new face was then reproduced in latex. In fact the actor actually removes his mask in one of the scenes. In 1994 the film won the Oscar for Best Makeup.
