15 prohibited activities in North Korea

7. Access the internet

All good dictators who are respected know that to maintain order and control of their population if to prevent them from seeing what is happening elsewhere around the world. In North Korea practically no one has access to the internet. To even own a computer you need to present a special official document which only a rare few elite members possess. If you do manage to get hold of a computer you won’t be able to access websites such as Facebook or Youtube, you will only land on a website called Kwangmyong.  It is a closed off intranet which only allows you access to North Korean propaganda websites and your emails.

8. Watch foreign television

In North Korea it is impossible to fight over the remote control. On TV there are only 3 channels, 2 of which only work at the weekend. The other channel is the main one, which only diffuses programs for 5 hours a day. For the rest of the day it is impossible to find another channel or a foreign television channel, if somehow you manage to watch something else you risk getting shot. In November 2013, 80 people were publicly shot because they were watching South Korean TV shoes via a DVD.

9. Phone abroad

Since the Egyptian company Orascom installed a telephone network in 2009, 10% of the population own a mobile phone. A low percentage because the average salary in North Korea is £45. The regime of Pyongyang is organised to that the population don’t need to buy anything and that they practically use/consume the same thing. Therefore it is pretty rare that someone can buy a phone that costs a couple of hundred of pounds. A telephone is pretty useless too as there is no 3G or 4G, no internet and you can call abroad.
