Make-up is really important in cinema just as it is in photography and cinema.  Nowadays, thanks to computer generated imaging technology, actor transformations are easier and more impressive to achieve than ever before  However nothing beats good old makeup which the original type of disguise!  Here are 10 of the most impressive make-up transformations in cinema.

1/ John Hurt in the Elephant Man

The make up for the film Elephant Man has an unusual backstory.  The actor John Hurt had to wear a latex prosthetic so that he could become the character of John Merrick.  It took several hours each day to fit the prosthetic.  The main character John Merrick was in fact a real person so the film recounts a true story.  After his death, John Merrick’s organs as well as molds for some of his body parts were conserved.  During the war, German air raids destroyed his organs however the molds miraculously stayed intact.  As a result the make-up team managed to use parts of the real face of John Merrick so as to accurately reconstruct his face and create a highly realistic transformation.  This make up  transformations clearly deserves to be on the list of the most impressive film makeup!

2/ Robert Englund in A Nightmare on Elm Street

Again Freddy Kruegar’s make up was created with a latex prosthetic.  Robert England had to sit for around 3 to 4 hours every day for his make up.  His make up artist David Miller said that Robert was one of the nicest people he had worked with in his career as he was very patient and never complained.  This is certainly one of the most impressive and scary makeup transformations!

3/ Johnny Depp din Edward Scissor Hands

On paper, scars, a pale complexion and messy hair doesn’t sound that impressive.  However these details are enough to make Johnny Depp look unrecogniseable!  As well as the makeup, Johnny Depp had to wear a really tight costume which was also exceedingly warm.  Scenes were often interrupted as the actor started to feel faint…

4/ Heath Ledger in the The Dark Night

A rather standard makeup that turned out to be very effective!  Heath Ledger actually came up with the make up himself. You could well believe it was done by an amateur as the white make up cracks under the actor’s expression.  Many layers were needed to create this roughly applied effect while black circles had to be added around Ledger’s eyes to create a more severe look. Together these details create a convincing result.  In fact, behind this make up, you hardly recognise the now deceased actor.

5/ Robin William in Mrs Doubtfire

Initially the film’s director, Chris Colombus, decided to put very little make on Robin William’s face, just a little lipstick and some light makeup. However the actor was immediately recognisable. Even with a false nose, you could still see recognise the man hidden behind. In the end they then decided to recreate the whole face by analyzing the portrait of more than 500 women! Eventually an elderly English woman’s portrait caught the film team’s attention and won the vote. William’s new face was then reproduced in latex. In fact the actor actually removes his mask in one of the scenes. In 1994 the film won the Oscar for Best Makeup.

Does quacking in your boots sound like your type of holiday fun?  Why not take a trip to Catalonia?  Here you’ll find some tapas, some sangria and… a terrifying horror theme park!  Constructed on a disused thermal power plant at in the village of Cerf, Horrorland is a temporary horror amusement park. As well as an escape game and four haunted houses, the Extreme House will most definitely give you goosebumps… You have to enter this haunted house alone, with no one their to help or support you. Before you enter this house you need to sign a waiver! Would you feel up to it?

2/ Scare Kingdom: The most terrifying amusement park in the work, England

In terms of horror amusement parks, Scare Kingdom is the place to go in Europe.  Scream park is open all year round but its programme changes depending on the season (Saint Valentines, Christmas, Halloween…)  Like every horror theme park, you can visit haunted houses and cross labyrinths each with very realistic themed decorations from Jack the Ripper to zombies or witches! You can also get the chance to try Psychomanteum Zero, one of the most terrifying attractions in the world!

3/ Thrill Park: A horror park using high class technology, Prague

Although this horror park is not in the same league as its fellow theme parks, its worth checking out due to its innovative ideas.  Although there is a haunted house, the action takes place in a virtual reality. Using this technology you can walk around the house while having to face zombie or serial killer attacks! This is certainly one of the most modern horror theme parks in the world.

4/ Farmaggedon: The horror farm, England

In Ormskirk you can find no less than five terrifying horror attraction with zombies, cannibals and clowns! There is something for everyone’s tastes and fears…  As well as the attractions you can also take part in a game of paintball against a team of famished zombies!

5/ Bates Motel : One of America’s oldest haunted houses

Like many horror theme parks based on films, Bates Motel takes on cinema legends. There are two main attractions in the theme park. One is the hotel’s list, inspired by the movie Psycho and the Bates Motel series and the other, and the most coveted attraction is the revenge of scarecrows! The aim of this attraction is to cross a labyrinth inside a very high cornfield. The visual and sonic special effects, convincing actors and creepy setting will be sure to get your heart rate racing!

1/”Musk Sticks”, sweets with a strange flavour and texture

In Australia and New Zealand, these long pink flavoured sticks are all the rage! They come in different flavours and are made from sugar, gelatin and icing sugar … as well as animal musk! The final ingredient mentioned in the list is in fact used in synthetic perfume production. Although they make you think of chewing gum, these unusual sweets melt in the mouth and taste of… eau de cologne!

2/ “Creamy Corn Candies”

1/ Jake Gyllenhaal in Southpaw (2015)

Jake Gyllenhaal is already well known for changing his physical characteristics in film. Almost always in a good shape, Gyllenhaal has gone from an athletic build to a muscular boxer while also transforming his physical appearance into someone who is extremely thin.

For his role in Night Call, Jake Gyllenhaal played the role of an unemployed man. He had drawn cheek bones as if he was no longer eating. In contrast for his role in Southpaw, he went through intense training so that he could sculpt his body with pronounced muscles. He quickly lost his muscular strength again for his role in the film “Stronger” when he played a thin man… with no legs!

2/ Javier Bardem in “The Sea inside” (2004)

In the film The Sea inside, Javier Bardem plays the role of a tetraplegic 21 years older than him. He stayed lying down for three months while regularly shaving the top of his head so that it would look like he was bald.

3/ 50 cents in “Things Fall Apart” (2011)

Everyone knows 50 cent has a good physical shape, so imagine him weighing around 30 kg less! This was the weight the rapper/actor had to lose for his role as the American football player diagnosed with cancer in the film Things Fall Apart.

4/ Chris Pratt in “Guardians of the Galaxy” (2014)

Would believe it it we told you that Chris Pratt was in fact overweight before becoming an Avenger? For one of his previous roles the actor weighed 136 Kg! After suffering health problems linked to his obese weight, Chris Pratt decided to take matters into his own hands and adopted a healthier diet running 8 km per day as well as doing 500 press-ups!

5/ Robert de Niro in “Raging Bull” (1998)

Robert De Niro has always been an imposing character but has never mixed his charisma with a big stature. In fact the actor was relatively skinny especially in films like Taxi Driver. However for his role as the boxer JakeLaMotta in the film Raging Bull, he had to gain muscles. His transformation was quite impressive as not only did he have to gain muscles but he had to become overweight for the same film. He ended up having to complete two very different physical transformations.

6/ Charlize Theron in the film “Monster” (2003)

Charlize is one of the only females in this list of physical transformations in cinema. She went all out for her role in the film Monster. So that she could gain 14 kg the actress ate a diet of chips and donuts. For the changes to her face Cherlize had latex masks so that she had a harder and pronounced face. The actresses’ hair and eyebrows were also dyed white and and partly shaved. Her hair was also dried out and made to look greasy.

Other than physicals transformations, the actress’s makeup meant that she could pale her complexion and she wore a dental prosthetic for the role. What is even more astonishing than her transformation is that she was able to lose the 14 kg only 3 weeks after the end of filming!

Gustav II airport in Saint-Barthélemy, one of French Antilles archipelago islands, can only accommodate planes with less than 30 people.  This is because the runway only measures 640 metres, ending before a beautiful lagoon. It wouldn’t be surprising to hear that planes have plunged into the water on occasion as the margin for error is very limited.  The same is true in Saint-Martin. The runway at Princess Juliana airport is right next to the sea meaning that highly skilled pilots need to fly over the beach with only a 10 metre margin!
