Mosquitoes: 16 common things you do that attract them without you realising it

Have people always referred to you as “catnip for mosquitoes”? Do you find yourself involuntarily sacrificing yourself (gentlemen that you are) to this swarm of buzzing insects, who only seem to sting you? A quality that is bound to be appreciated by your friends this Summer, but which may have you wondering just what it is about your skin that mosquitoes seem to love so dearly. However, not everything depends on skin type…

When it comes to mosquito bites, you know only too well what we are talking about. Every year it’s the same story – you can’t help yourself scratching like a dog with fleas. It must be admitted that you’re not the biggest fan of these little beasties. You only need one tiny patch of skin to be exposed and it turns into a mini itching volcano. However, if you think you are the equivalent of steak for mosquitoes, be aware that not everything comes down to your skin type. The amount of carbon dioxide emitted, your clothes, perfumes or diet can all play a role. Read on to find out what attracts mosquitoes, so as best to keep them at bay.

1/ Exercise

Unfortunately, athletes are in the line of fire. Mosquitoes love the smell of sweat and the substances it contains (ammonia, lactic acid and uric acid). They are attracted by heat, and body heat is no exception. Athletes and mosquitoes make for a not so beautiful love story. But instead of giving up exercise for good, arm yourself with some insect repellent!

3/ Wearing dark coloured clothes

Mosquitoes appear to like dark colours. Brown, blue or black, dark shades appear to be more easily spotted (from around 1.5 meters away). To protect yourself, wear lighter coloured garments.

4/ Breathing

Of course, we are not suggesting that you try to hold your breath as soon as you spot a mozzie! However, mosquitoes are attracted by carbon dioxide, which you emit when you breathe out. These pesky insects are able to detect CO2 from around 30 meters away. Make friends with your mosquito net.

5/ Being overweight

Mosquitoes can be attracted by the heat and humidity that builds up in certain parts of the body. This is the case for the armpits or any skin folds, for example. Thus, people who are carrying a few extra kilos are more prone to being bitten.
