Philippine Cockatoos haven’t always been on the Red List. In 1950 they were very common on the island. However the species has seen a rapid decline for a variety of reasons including poaching, human persecution, the destruction of mangroves, which is it’s natural habitat, or due to repeated typhoons. This decline is so severe that there are only about 100 left in the wild today.
7/ Dama gazelle, Afrique
This gazelle is also on the list of species that are critically threatened by extinction. It is believed that there are only about 500 left in the species population. But what has caused this worrying decline? Hunting is a big reason but also severe drought has affected their pasture lands.
8/ Spider Monkey, Brasil
The spider monkey is a species of monkey that is in danger of becoming extinct. Currently the species has a population of less than 855. Deforestation is among one of the leading causes of these decreasing numbers as it is destroying the monkeys’ natural habitat. .
9/ Red Tuna, Pacific Ocean
Specialists believe that Red Tuna will be completely extinct by 2023. The main read is due to extreme over fishing. Help the tuna and don’t buy it!
10/ Gharial Crocodile, Nepal & India
The decline of this crocodile started in Burma in Bangladesh and Pakistan where they now no longer exist. Although it is considered a sacred animal in the Middle East, it is not spared from poaching. The quality of the skin is highly sought after. However hunting is not the only factor. The increase in water way traffic and agriculture also play a role in it’s decline.
