There’s no rest for the wicked, and that includes those who work in IT. Because these days, our connected era depends hugely on IT systems: there would be no banks without servers, no movies without downloading, no jobs (almost) without PCs, no websites without coding, etc. The list goes on. So if you have the “bad luck” to work in this domain, you are sure to understand the responsibility that weighs heavily on your shoulders. Here are a few situations that are sure to be familiar to you.
1/ When you go to a friend’s house and are always asked to fix their computer or electronics
To make sure you won’t be seen again for the rest of the evening!
2/ When you are made to understand that all of your company’s problems arise because of IT problems
The alarm that went off over the weekend, the printer that has run out of paper, the automatic bank transfers that didn’t go through, the bus drivers’ rota that wasn’t updated or the film that was released in the wrong language, much to the chagrin of the spectators: all of that, and more, is the fault of IT. And by proxy, your fault as well.
3/ When people think you know absolutely everything that can be done on a computer, without exception
You know how to hack the Chinese government, create a video game, make a website or enlarge your neighbour’s chest size using Photoshop like a pro, right? They teach you that in college, don’t they?
4/ When you see problems everywhere
Anywhere you go, you see the things that others don’t see: Windows error messages on the museum computer, the blue screen on a parking meter, or even little lines of code shown on the ads screen in your shopping centre…
5/ When you have to choose a side and never change your mind. Ever.
You are obliged to make the right choice and never be wrong: Mac, Linux or Windows -pick your team and stick with them for the rest of your life. Because if you dare to change, get ready for the social fall out. Prepare yourself to justify yourself in front of your jury of friends, who are just as geeky as you are.
6/ The puppy dog eyes you get when somebody’s electronics are broken down
And knowing that you’ll be hated if you don’t help out!
