Each nation in the British Isles has it’s own unique culture which is why our country is so diverse and varied.  From accents that change between villages, ancient Celtic languages, local delicacies, and cultural traditions, there are a lot of things which set the people in Britain apart.  However because of these differences strong national stereotypes can start to  develop.  Here are 10 stereotypical comments that every Welsh person will have heard a hundred times… do they start to wind you up after a while? 

Although some stereotypes may be true you never like to admit it and often it can really wind you up.  Wales is a nation known as strong Rugby nation with excellent singing voices and a thick accent that is tricky to understand… We might be proud of our cultural heritage but some of these comment are sure to get you frustrated!

Is Wales in England?

This is a comment that can really get you going. No, Wales is a country in it’s own right!  It has it’s own flag, it’s own language, it’s own Rugby team… what more can you ask for?  England might have a greater land mass but the Welsh are not English!

There might be a lot of farms in Wales but not everyone is a farmer!  It feels like some people think that once you cross the bridge to Cardiff you’ll just find a big massive field!

Can you say something in Welsh?

This is a question you will get asked frequently if you come from Wales.  But not everyone speaks the language even if it is written on all signs! However you can always have a few up your sleeve like Popty-Ping for microwave and Yaki -Da for cheers…

You must be a really good singer

It is true there are a lot of great choirs and singers in Wales which have their roots from the mining community culture. The National and International Eisteddfod are well known events but everyone knows Wales to be the country of Dame Shirley Bassey, Duffy, Charlotte Church, Sir Tom Jones and Stereophonics!

You meet some in a pub and they find out your Welsh they will most definitely try and give you there “best” Welsh accent.  However most people just end up sounding Jamaican!

Excuse me can you repeat your address to me again?

Well if you come from Llanfairpwll-gwyngyllgogerychwyrndrob-wllllantysiliogogogoch, the longest town name in Europe, it could be even more complicated to spell out your address.  Welsh words have a lot of consonants and few vowels which can be a real pain to explain to people over the phone!

Wales is known for it’s rich industrial  heritage but today there are a diverse range of professions. This is a cliché that you can’t easily get away from as the Valleys were known as a important mining region before it’s notable decline in the 1980s.

Is Tom Jones your national hero?

You might not want to admit it if you are from Wales but everyone does like a bit of Tom Jones.  Rugby fans often sing Delilah despite the controversy surrounding the song..

What is the welsh minute?

Well what do you think, I’ll be there now in a minute, so obviously I don’t exactly know it could be any time from straight away to in an hours time!
